Mad MoneyNaturally a long-term housewife is not capable of devising a plan to rob the Federal Reserve Bank; but if that fact is ignored, an amusing caper film is unveiled.

Bridget (Diane Keaton) is an upper middle class corporate wife forced to join the workforce but her lack of job skills means the only job she can find is cleaning lady at the Federal Reserve. Her desperation and unauthorized observations lead Bridget to devise the perfect plan to steal bundles of worn-out cash before it is destroyed. To make her plan work, she needs the help of two other underestimated employees: it’s a three-woman job. Approaching Nina (Queen Latifah) and Jackie (Katie Holmes) with the idea is risky but it really pays off. After all, “crime is contagious.”

Mad Money is a different take on the crime film, replacing the male protagonists with clever women and focusing on the aftermath of the heist rather than the preparation and particulars of the robbery. Not surprisingly, the film could never have been made if it was at all realistic (much like the Ocean’s movies) but it is based on a true story, originally filmed as Hot Money in Britain.

It definitely benefits from good casting, as Keaton, Latifah and Holmes mesh believably while wholly representing each of their characters well and Stephen Root is just the right kind of creepy as the always watching head of security.

The director’s commentary is interesting in the beginning but becomes less so as the film progresses and the ‘behind-the-scenes’ feature is mostly a character exploration with the actors patting each other on the back.
